Reliefs

The reliefs of Olivier Julia exist in one-offs and limited editions. They often originate as part of a series. They can be made up of a sequence of separate elements constituting one work of art. Light and shade create rhythm and depth. The dominant blacks, in all nuances, give the relief a vibrant musicality. Within the boundaries of each block a unique measure is used, the build-up consisting of sequences of separate loose elements. At first glance the reliefs of Olivier Julia may look akin to the wall objects but they are not so much about the relation between surrounding space and object as they are about the sensation of an experience of a surface confined by the artist.
